Magnificat & Gloria

Magnificat & Gloria

On Friday, November 20, 2026, Bachkoor Apeldoorn, under the direction of conductor Bas van den Heuvel, will present a special concert. This time in collaboration with Ramsey Nasr: actor, director, poet, and writer.

In the expressive Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the turbulent emotional world of the late eighteenth century becomes audible. The music bubbles with energy, drama and surprising twists, while Mary’s words of wonder and gratitude take centre stage.

The Hör mein Bitten by Mendelssohn is a plea to God for help. In text and music, mortal fear resonates, as does the intense desire to be delivered from it.

The Gloria by Francis Poulenc then opens up a completely different sound world, in which sparkling joy and stillness alternate.

Together, these works form a musical journey full of light, prayer and inspiration, while Ramsey Nasr invites us to reflect on the question of how we can open ourselves up to this music in today’s complex world.

Ramsey Nasr

Ramsey Nasr, actor, director, writer and former Dichter des Vaderlands will add lustre to this concert in his own unique way.

In a general sense: what do these texts say to us today? What does that mean, that unconditional surrender? Do we still know these feelings? Are they still relevant? And what role does singing itself play in this? Nasr will also take us, performers and audience alike, on a more personal exploration, during which a number of questions will be reviewed. For what is uninhibited joy actually (Magnificat)? When does something like that turn into uncertainty or fear (Hör mein Bitten)? Why do we want to flee from this? What are ‘peccata mundi’ (sins of the world)? What are míjn sins of the world? Or, what are the sins of míjn world? Is there a solution to this confusing uncertainty and how can it take shape (Gloria!)? Plenty of questions, then – but are there also answers?

We are counting on it being an unforgettable evening. You are most welcome.
