Kerst met Mahler 6

A new episode in the familiar tradition of Christmas with Mahler. Chief Conductor Alexei Ogrintchouk leads the orchestra this year in Mahler’s Sixth Symphony – the most dramatic the composer ever wrote, full of a struggle between somber minor and hopeful major.

Written during the happiest period of his life as a celebrated composer and conductor, with his beloved Alma by his side, the Sixth is the most dramatic symphony Mahler committed to paper. In this ‘Tragic’, as Mahler initially labeled it, somber minor and hopeful major constantly vie for honor. The Sixth is so much more than the symphony with the famous hammer blow, or that of the peaceful summer atmosphere in the countryside with gently tinkling cowbells. It is a grand work that fits the time of year perfectly, looking back on the joy and sorrow in the world and in life.
