Café Kaváfis
Writer Abdelkader Benali wanders through the centuries-old history of the Mediterranean together with violinist and theater maker Myrthe Helder and musicians from Orchestre Partout. In Café Kaváfis, classical music, Turkish and Sufi melodies, flamenco, and Arabic maqam come together in an ode to the traveler – and to everyone who ever belonged somewhere.
Café Kaváfis is a place where no one asks what you are doing there, and where arriving and departing are a matter of course. In a corner, a man writes poems; around him move travelers, merchants, musicians, and lovers—from Genoa to Aleppo, from Tangier to Beirut. The arak flows and the musicians begin to play.
They bring stories of war and love, of mass tourism and ancient civilizations, of longing for a better world and an uncertain future. The music transcends borders, bridges centuries, and opens worlds.
Club Classique brings classical music to a wide variety of venues, from festivals to concert halls. For Café Kaváfis , artistic director and violinist Myrthe Helder collaborates with writer and storyteller Abdelkader Benali, known for novels and plays in which identity, migration, and culture take center stage. They previously created Een Nacht met Sjahrazade together. Orchestre Partout is an ensemble of musicians with a refugee background who bring their own musical traditions into a rich and contemporary soundscape.
