Orkest de Ereprijs and actor/singer Marien Jongewaard present an ‘opera by other means’ — a musical-theatrical evening at the intersection of concert, play, and political satire.
It is 2031. Europe has fallen apart, the Netherlands stands at a crossroads, and its cultural dikes are threatened from all sides. When an agreement with the US grants thirteen Dutch songs official heritage status, a hit singer is asked to present the best of the Golden Age of Dutch music. But the evening unfolds anything but smoothly.
In Alle 13 goed, Marien Jongewaard portrays a singer performing The Official Dutch Heritage Selection with Orkest de Ereprijs: the most beautiful songs from the seventies, the most optimistic post-war decade. The songs hail from the land of clay and convey the soul of Holland with sincere feeling. However, not all original lyrics are uncontroversial in the new century, and among the musicians turn out to be old left-wing avant-garde artists who carry out subversive interventions.
The composition is strictly structured: twelve movements in all keys, chromatically arranged — a nod to Sweelinck’s Fantasia Chromatica . And then there is the thirteenth song. Whether Marien will receive applause with it remains suspenseful until the very end.
